The Pulsar’s published specifications indicated that they’d be a fairly easy load, and with a larger cabinet volume than the Rosebud II, I was optimistic that the blend of my new room, my 80Wpc tube amp, and the Josephs would be a synergistic one. Since minimonitors often need lots of power to bring them dynamically alive, and to meet their sometimes challenging impedance and efficiency specs, I had to search for a while - until I ran smack dab into Joseph Audio’s Pulsar ($7700/pair). This was just a bit too much space for my little Red Rose Rosebud IIs ($3500 USD per pair when available) to fill, but it seemed appropriate for a stand-mounted design that was reasonably efficient and somewhat larger. My new room measures 14’L x 9’W, with a 9’ opening along one side into a large kitchen, and a faceted sloping ceiling with a maximum height of 11’. Minimonitors also avoid the problem of something I can’t stand: mushy, one-note bass. I love minis’ speed and transparency, and their often-sublime coherence, imaging, and soundstaging. My old listening room was perfectly suited to my favorite type of loudspeaker, the stand-mounted minimonitor. Inevitably, they’re shocked by how much bass some smaller speakers can produce - yet what they’re really hearing is taut, pitch-defined upper bass that has tons of snap where the mud used to be.Īs I moved into a new house this summer, I thought about this a lot. Asked for advice in setting up a system, I’ve told many friends to pull the bass in a notch, explaining that unless they listen only to hardcore dance or techno, or if most of their friends are tweaked-up ravers, so much bass will overload their rooms. Needless to say, the sneaky bastard who’d set it up for him made a nice chunk of change.īass freaks never seem to have enough until there’s waaaaay too much. He loved that system, and I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he could have spent vastly less and gotten far better sound. However, as nothing good ever comes from some punk audiophile scribbler offering advice after the purchase has been made, I stayed mum. The sound was not good - the poor room was overwhelmed at both ends of the audioband and at many points in between. I once attended a dinner party at the home of a wealthy music lover who, when he learned that we shared that passion, invited me downstairs to listen to his “big rig.” The system, set up by an “expert,” included some very expensive hardware shoehorned into a space too small to accommodate the power amplifier and the two large subwoofers and the pair of near-full-range speakers. Or perhaps they don’t understand how much power and speaker a room can accommodate, or lack access to anyone, be it a friend or a reputable dealer, who can offer guidance. This is sometimes because they don’t know what sound they want, and sometimes because they make buying choices based on price alone, figuring that the more expensive equipment must automatically sound better. Many people who get into hi-fi spend way too much money for the sound they get. Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Act III (1892) “What is a cynic? The Owl House creator Dana Terrace confirmed that Amity Blight is a lesbian, making her the first major recurring LGBT character in a Disney animated series. She now is more open and expresses her true self and loves Luz dearly as their relationship grows with her. She became very protective of Luz and gave up the portal key to the Golden Guard, or Hunter, to protect her. Later in the series when she sees it was her parent's pressure for success, family reputation, and emotional abuse is what caused her to behave like this and antagonize Willow, Luz, and Gus, we see the sweet side of her. Currently Amity has shoulder-length hair and her hair dye has faded overtime while staying at the human realm, causing it to be a Faded pink shade with her roots visible on the top of her head.Įarlier in the show, Amity is very mean to others she views as inferior such as Luz and Willow and is seen as an antagonist. Near the end of "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", Amity decides to dye her hair lilac, with brown hair visible at her temples. Amity's hair is two-toned, comprised of shades of aquamarine with brown hair-her natural hair color-visible at the roots. In "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door", she and Luz are now dating.Īmity has chin-length hair with a ponytail pulling the front hair out of her face, pale skin, and bright golden eyes. Thanks to Luz, she now reconciles with Willow and is now friends with her, Luz and Gus after standing up to her mother. As the top of her class, Amity Blight is character that originally was known as the antagonist seeing her bully the main character/protagonist (Luz Noceda) and Luz's friend, Willow Park, but later had a redemption arc after getting to know Luz better, falling in love with her, and revealing that Amity's parents were forcing Amity to sever ties with Willow and saying she couldn't be friends with her because she is too weak. maybe it was that moment I helped the guy choking in Ihop did I realize I'm a husky who needs to be pulling a sled constantly & helping people. I'm interested in 15T because I get the chance at an A&P certificate which is big money in the civilian world & if I ever wanted a decent life outside the Army this would be the ticket for me. The elements to be added to the array, beginning from start. In this case, you have to specify at least one new element. If deleteCount is 0 or negative, no elements are removed. deleteCount - An integer indicating the number of elements in the array to remove from start.start - The starting index for changing elements in the array. Here is the syntax of Array.splice(): array. Array.splice() returns the removed elements (if any) as an array. This method modifies the contents of the original array by removing or replacing existing elements and/or adding new elements in place. Splice and filter are some of the common ways using native JavaScripts array methods. In JavaScript, the Array.splice() method can be used to add, remove, and replace elements from an array. There are many ways to remove a specific item in an array. We need to be aware of the data mutation in these methods, for instance, splice changes the original array, while filter creates a brand new array. const fruits = Ĭonst newArray = fruits.filter((item) => item != "□") Ĭonsole.log(newArray) // output: Ĭonsole.log(fruits) // output: įilter can directly handle duplicates, while splice needs extra help. When we output newArray, notice how both of the unicorns are removed, and when we console.log(fruits) again, it's still the original array. The filter method is very similar to findIndex, in that the first parameter is a conditional function. We can also handle duplicates this way, as it checks against every single element in the array. Unlike splice which mutates the data, filter creates a new array with elements that fit the condition. So if you need to handle duplicates, there's a more straightforward way we'll show you in the next method. You might've noticed there was more than one unicorn in the above code.īecause findIndex will only return the first element that satisfies the condition, we are still left with another unicorn. So here we see that the output for the removeItem function is an array of just fruits, and the original fruits array remains unchanged. Finally, We will need to return the variable newArray to be able to get the output. Recall how the splice method's first parameter is the index you want to change, and the second parameter is how many elements you want to remove in the array. To use the findIndex method, we will type in the condition we want it to satisfy.įinally, to make sure we found the unicorn, we will check that the variable index does not equal to -1, before splicing it to remove the item. But if it returns -1, then it means there wasn't the element that fit the condition. This will find the first element that satisfies the condition function. We will create a function that takes an array and item as parameters.įirst, to copy the array, we will use the spread operator. We're going to copy the array, find the index, and splice it! const fruits = Ĭonst index = newArray.findIndex((item) => item = "□") Ĭonsole.log(removeItem(fruits, "□")) // output: Here, we will be using the arrow function syntax in ES6. Let's look back at the fruits array again. But what if we don't want to mutate the original array? Something to be extra careful about is when using splice, the original array is mutated, meaning you are changing the original array. Notice how the output of the splice function returns the unicorn in an array, whereas fruits array has changed to a unicorn-free fruit salad. const fruits = Ĭonsole.log(fruits.splice(2, 1)) // outputs: Ĭonsole.log(fruits) // output: The second parameter determines how many items you want to delete, which will be 1. To remove an item using splice, the first parameter is the index of the item we want to remove. Splice mutates the original codeīelow is our array filled with fruits and a unicorn. The return value of the splice method is a new array containing the deleted elements. Splice changes the contents of the array by removing, replacing, or adding new elements. Watch the tutorial here or click the video below to watch it! Method 1: Splice Methodįirst off, what does the splice method do? In this tutorial, we are going to look at how to remove a specific item from an array using JavaScript's native array methods: splice and filter. How would you go about using JavaScript's native array methods to remove that product ID from your shopping cart array? Have you ever been stuck trying to remove a specific item from an array? Imagine this: you are working on a shopping cart delete feature where you need to delete an item that the user doesn't want anymore. How to Annotate Digital Textsĭigital texts can present a special challenge when it comes to annotation emerging research suggests that many students struggle to critically read and retain information from digital texts. This resource includes a link to the teacher's free Annotation Bookmark (via Teachers Pay Teachers). Here, a sixth grade teacher demonstrates the strategies she uses for getting her students to annotate with sticky notes. Teaching Students to Close Read. When You Can't Mark the Text (Performing in Education) Sometimes students are asked to annotate books they don't own or can't write in for other reasons. This resource provides some strategies for using sticky notes instead. This blog post, written by a student, talks about how the goals and approaches of annotation might change depending on the type of text or performance being observed.Īnnotating Texts with Sticky Notes (Lyndhurst Schools) This video tutorial (appropriate for grades 6–10) explains the basic ins and outs of annotation and gives examples of the type of information students should be looking for.Īnnotation Practices: Reading a Play-text vs. How to Annotate Text While Reading (YouTube) This is a good place for a student who has never annotated before to begin. This resource gives an overview of annotation styles, including useful shorthands and symbols. What is Annotating? (Charleston County School District) But what tools do you need? How do you prepare? The resources linked in this section list strategies and techniques you can use to start annotating. Once you understand what annotation is, you're ready to begin. It includes a helpful section that teaches students how to annotate reading comprehension passages on tests. This website provides another introduction to annotation (designed for 11th graders). It also discusses how technology and digital texts might affect the future of annotation.Īnnotating to Deepen Understanding (Texas Education Agency) This scholarly article summarizes research on the benefits of annotation in the classroom and in business. The Future of Annotation (Journal of Business and Technical Communication) In this article, a high school teacher discusses the importance of annotation and how annotation encourages more effective critical thinking. How Annotation Reshapes Student Thinking (TeacherHUB) This famous, charming essay lays out the case for marking up books, and provides practical suggestions at the end including underlining, highlighting, circling key words, using vertical lines to mark shifts in tone/subject, numbering points in an argument, and keeping track of questions that occur to you as you read. The links in this section will introduce you to the theory, practice, and purpose of annotation. In other words, proper annotation is an organizing tool and a time saver. Why annotate? As the resources below explain, annotation allows students to emphasize connections to material covered elsewhere in the text (or in other texts), material covered previously in the course, or material covered in lectures and discussion. So, whether you're reading a novel, poem, news article, or science textbook, taking notes along the way can give you an advantage in preparing for tests or writing essays. This guide contains resources that explain the benefits of annotating texts, provide annotation tools, and suggest approaches for diverse kinds of texts the last section includes lesson plans and exercises for teachers. Proper annotation allows students to record their own opinions and reactions, which can serve as the inspiration for research questions and theses. Annotation is like a conversation between reader and text. Or, at least (according to education experts), annotation–an umbrella term for underlining, highlighting, circling, and, most importantly, leaving comments in the margins–helps students to remember and comprehend what they read.
